Well now you can publish your books yourself online with probably few clicks. Mudranik Technologies, a Bangalore based start-up by two IITians, has launched a new website that will help writers easily self publish their books in print without any upfront cost. The platform uses print on demand technology, where even a single copy of a book can be produced cost-effectively.
The website is called Pothi.com. The website lets authors upload the soft copy of their book. It gets listed in the online store at Pothi.com from where readers can order it. Pothi.com takes care of the production and shipping of the book, and the profit is shared with the author. The royalty earned per copy is decided by the author himself.
The site has a self-publishing price calculator where you can enter the book pages, type of binding, "expected profit per copy" and it will calculate the price for your book.
Jaya Jha, the co-founder of the website Pothi.com quit her Google India job to start this venture. Pothi.com is not the only site that provides you self-publishing platform in India. There are few major players as well in this niche. Future Group's dePOT is one of them. While Future Group's Self-Publishing platform gives nice visual pricing information, it is definitely pricier than what Pothi.com has to offer. The cost of printing 300 page book on Pothi.com can cost about ~500 (with few assumptions), the same book can cost around 3000 with depotIndia.in.
Another self-publishing site for India is CinnamonTeal Print & Publishing Services. Their pricing is rather simpler. They have their formula to calculate what would be the cost of publishing the book.
Price of book = Production Costs + Author's Revenue + CinnamonTeal Commission
Its a tough market out there for self publishing and I wish good luck to Pothi.com team for their venture.
