We have picked up three most important things/tasks that every Indians should do over Internet via websites and they are – Railway Reservation, Money Transfer and News. We did select these three because of their availability in most of the places like not so developed Indian cities or towns. Like say any person having Internet in his PC can book a railway ticket online irrespective of his place.

Lets discuss these three things in details -

Railway Reservation - IRCTC is the website where you can order railway tickets including reservation online. Open and account at IRCTC and after logging in, their web application would ask you to enter the source railway station, destination station, date and on submitting these info it would show you different trains that run between both the specified stations in that particular date. Also you can query the availability of tickets for any of the trains and all other details like fares, time based schedule of train and status. After doing some research you can pick a train and reserve a ticket for it. 

You can pay there by selecting your bank and it would take you to a page in the bank’s internet banking portal where you pay the money and then it redirects back to the railway site where you continue reservation. You can either print a ticket or use a code to get the ticket from the ISRTC counter at your nearest railway station. This saves a lot of time and now no waiting in those long queues in the ticket booking counters. You can check the PNR Status to know whether your reservation is confirmed or is in waiting list or is made against RAC any time after booking the ticket in that site itself.  Also other railways sites like IndianRail, TrainEnquiry provide all the vital information regarding train schedules, status of availability, PNR status etc but here you cannot book a ticket.

Money Transfer - Yes there is no need for Indians to send money by direct deposit to bank account as you can use Internet banking portal of your bank to transfer money to anybody having an account in a NEFT enabled bank. All Indian banks including SBI, ICCI etc have a lot of customers doing all monetary transactions over net using Internet Banking so you should start using and inter bank transfers between all NEFT enabled banks is possible. For opening internet banking account in SBI fill up the required form and submit to bank’s branch manager. After that he would give you a Kit that has a temporary login ID and password for logging in for first time. You can login into SBI’s internet banking portal with this temporary ID after a day and change username and passwords.

India News – News comes at a much faster rate in Internet than in news papers and sometimes Tv also. You can either visit the websites of the news channels like Zee News, NDTV or syndicate to their RSS feeds for getting regular updates. Also remember to visit news websites related to anything you would like.
