The announcement by Facebook that it would charge it’s user for having an account on the website came as a shock to many. Now there would be two account options for the user - Free and Pro.

The free membership will allow user to share links and pictures but the size of the pictures is to be limited to the size of a thumbnail or popups or big banner ads only. Also Before each login the free users have to participate in a paid survey. The entire process will take 10 minutes maximum according to Facebook.

The Pro members do not have any limitation on pictures. They can post, share and watch videos of any size and resolution. Facebook said that all of its current users would become free users from next month if they do not pay the pro membership’s fee. The cost of Pro membership is not made public yet but it is rumoured to be around $10(about Rs.450) for a month.

The new pro membership will be first initiated in US where the users will be provided with unlimited storage for their pictures and videos. After that the memberships will be available throughout the world.

Also Facebook is currently attracting many companies, advertisers, web developers and many more. There are a large number of cool games with advertiser’s ads in Facebook. Though the Games are free, it is rumoured that the games can be played only on buying a gaming pack. The cost of the pack has not yet been disclosed.

Though I admit it is a money consuming and gigantic task to maintain the database for millions of people and making the interface more user-friendly. But still charging the user for it is not a good idea. Please share your views on this topic.
