MacRumors pointed out to a new option in the “Contacts" application which allows users to make FaceTime calls using either a phone number or an email address. This falls in line with rumors of an upcoming iPod touch packing a front-facing camera, as well as a back camera.
According to the site, the first evidence for email address compatibility was actually unearthed in July, when alleged screenshots showing the option to associate email addresses with FaceTime emerged.
Apple is yet to confirm anything about the iOS 4.1 operating system while the slated period of release of these next-generation devices is also unknown.
The fact that Apple is enabling FaceTime calls with an email address isn't terribly surprising. They want the standard to spread as much as possible, and if they were to open it up to iPod Touches and iPads, the number of FaceTime users would explode. Would any of you pick up a new iPad or iPod Touch if it included a camera and FaceTime functionality?
