The Face in Space program has a long tradition of spaceflights behind its back. It all started in 1997 signatures of students were carried by the shuttles as part of the project ‘Student Signatures in Space’.
The Cassini Spacecraft has transported a disk of signatures around Saturn. The Phoenix mars Lander has taken a DVD to Mars. Not in the last place the Lunar Reconnaissance orbiter took a microchip to the moon surface. Finally the exoplanet searching orbital telescope Kepler took a full DVD with names and messages into orbit.
The cargo of a Voyager spacecraft was even more personal. It carried a phonograph record of peculiar sounds such as mother’s first words to her child and brain waves of Carl Sagan wife Ann Druyan. But this was the first time when everybody had the option to send a picture into space.
The requirement is to be at least 13 years old. All that is necessary to do is to upload your own photo on the site and choose the flight missions on which you wish your photo to fly. There will be two missions. The first will start on September 16 with the launch of space shuttle Discovery. The second one is planned to be in November when the space shuttle Endeavor will be launched into space.
After the shuttle return you can get a ‘flight certificate’ signed by the mission commander. Meanwhile the NASA offers another promotion ‘Space your face’ where you will be able to send an animated astronaut and choose a picture for his boogies.
