Today Skype launched its free VoIP application Skype for Symbian platform in OVI Store. Besides free Skype to Skype voice calls, the app enables you to send and receive instant messages, share pictures, video and other files, receive calls to your online number, and import names and numbers from your phone’s address book.

With this new application from Skype, now Nokia symbian phone users can make Skype-to-Skype calls for free across the globe. This means you have to pay for your data transfer charges. Skype make your phone as a VoIP phone, when you make an International call.

Skype is planning to make the application available for other symbian mobiles phone manufatured by companies like Sony Ericson. As for now, the application will support only Nokia Smartphones which runs on Symbian platform.
"We're seeing around 1.5 million downloads a day on Ovi Store now and believe that the Skype client for Nokia smartphones will have wide appeal to Symbian users," Jo Harlow, Nokia senior vice president for smartphones.
The Symbian operating system is the Nokia's key platform for smartphones, had a world-leading market share in 2009 of 47% according to research firm Gartner Inc.

Currently the Skype for Symbian works for Nokia models: Nokia N97, Nokia N97 mini, Nokia X6, Nokia 5800 XpressMusic and Nokia 5530 and the following non-touch devices: Nokia E72, Nokia E71, Nokia E90, Nokia E63, Nokia E66, Nokia E51, Nokia N96, Nokia N95, Nokia N95 8Gb, Nokia N85, Nokia N82, Nokia N81, Nokia N81 8 Gb, Nokia N79, Nokia N78, Nokia 6220 classic, Nokia 6210 Navigator, Nokia 5320.
