Now mobile users can have their existing telephone number when they transfer from one service provider to another through Mobile Number Portability. This service is available to users irrespective of mobile technology or from one technology to another of the same or any other access service provider within same service area.
In a series of meeting conducted by Department of Telecom , requested their concerned service provider to implement the MNP service as early as possible. Some of the Access and ILD service providers have upgraded their network with MNP operators. As these process are time consuming , a specified time frame is given by DoT for various activities.
To implement this MNP, the country has been categorized in to two zones. The license will be issued to operators in each zone for MNP implementation purpose. The operators will provide centralized database , query response and clearing house to provide correct routing of calls by Access service providers and International Long Distance operators to implement MNP.
When the service providers are ready , a complete Acceptance Test will be carried away by Department of Telecom across the networks of all the concerned service providers. Government is likely to launch this by March 31,2010.
