Looks like AT&T is slowly releasing its grip on the iPhone locks. AT&T recently unlock the MMS feature for the iPhone 3GS and now it is unblocking port 5060 for the famous VoIP SIP communication.

AT&T has just opened the door for iPhone users to use inexpensive SIP termination service providers of their choice. If you go to your App Store, you will find an application called Siphone. Just install the application and punch in your favorite SIP settings for your iPhone.

Once you have your iPhone SIP settings for VoIP calls ready, you can make free international calls using VoIP from your iPhone over the 3G network.

Tom Keating at TMCNET was able to use siphon, a SIP app for the iPhone over 3G. That means now you can use Fring, Skype, Gizmo5, iCall and all the other VoIP applications (that uses SIP protocol) over the AT&T 3G network.
