Yahoo Messenger for the Web allows people to check their instant messages and access their buddy list from anywhere, which could prove useful for those who are traveling or are forbidden from downloading client software to their computers at work.
The Web version of the chat application offers functions that the downloaded version does not, such as the ability to search current and archived messages from any computer. It also lets users maintain multiple conversations in one window with different tabs instead of opening up chats in multiple windows.
Web messenger is also integrated with their other applications like Yahoo Answers!. I am a yahoo answers contributor and I have couple of fans who added me in their contact list. So when first time I logged into yahoo web messenger, I got message saying that those two person want to add me as their friend. Its pretty slick.
Yahoo rivals Google and Microsoft already have Web-based versions of their instant-message applications with Gmail, which launched in 2004, and MSN Web Messenger, respectively.
Alternative applications include Meebo, an independent site that allows users to access all the main instant messaging applications from a single Web interface. I believe meebo guys are pretty smart to realize that the biggies will join the online IM war and that’s why they launched meebome - which has really taken meebo to a new level.
Yahoo Web messenger also provides feature to add Windows Live messenger friends and vice versa. (Check out the image above). I was little surprised when I saw this message when I first login to web messenger. But then I found out that back in October 2005 MSN and Yahoo announced a landmark agreement to connect users of their consumer instant messaging (IM) services on a global basis.
This interoperability agreement between two distinct leading global consumer IM providers gave MSN Messenger and Yahoo! Messenger users the ability to interact with each other, forming what is expected to be the largest consumer IM community in the world, estimated to be more than 275 million strong.
So now if you are in office, or in school lab and wants to try chatting with your friends without installing the IM client, you know where to go. The site is
- http://webmessenger.yahoo.com/ or
- the shorter version http://web.im
