So the word is out, Google Voice has rolled out more invitations to more people as they have bought 1 million phone numbers. Google Voice is basically an integration of Grand Central into Google Umbrella with more features and more goodies. The title of this article says that you can make and receive free calls to India with Google Voice but this is true for any country. You can make and receive free calls to Pakistan, Singapore, UK, Dubai, UAE and virtually any country using Google Voice where you have internet connection. So how does that work? Lets go step by step

First of all you need to get an invitation from Google Voice (That is the toughest Part). If you have been following Google Voice Launch, you might have registered your email to get the notification. If you have, you will get the invitation soon. Anyone with Google account can now sign up for google voice.

Let's start from the point where you have the account.

1. Google currently doesn't allow you to register from outside USA. So if you are outside USA and got an invitation to Google Voice, you might want to use one of those proxy servers to pretend that you are from USA. Finish the registration process. If you have someone in USA, you can ask them to finish up the first part by giving them your logon credentials (of course someone you trust)

2. Second step is to get one of the USA local phone number. You can easily look for an area code based on the USA Map. Pick the area code that is close to your relative or a place where any of your relatives belong to. Once you choose your area code, Google Voice will give you list of Free available incoming phone numbers, pick the one that is easy to remember for you.

3. The next step is to add one of the phone number to your Google Voice.  Now that you are not from USA, you probably won't have USA number. Don't worry, Google has an option to include your Gizmo5 account to your Google Voice. So for that, you can read this article that guides you through how to create free voip phone with free incoming number. You can skip the IPKall registration part. As long as you have Gizmo5 account, you are good to go.

4. Now that you have Gizmo5 account, go to Google Voice ->Settings->Phones. Click on Add new phone number and select "Gizmo" from the drop down. Now enter your Gizmo5 number that starts with 747. (check the image below)

5. Once you add this number, Google Voice will call you on your Gizmo5 number to verify the account. When you Gizmo5 rings, enter the two digit code to confirm your Gizmo phone number.

6. Now you have tied your Gizmo5 account with Google Voice. SO you have one Free USA incoming number that will your Gizmo5 account.

7. Now if you have friends/relatives from USA, you can add their phone numbers to your Google Contacts. When you want to call any USA number, just click on a Call button and enter a USA number that you want to call for free and then select your Gizmo number to call.

8. Your Gizmo number will ring first, once you pick up your Gizmo call, it will be connected to the USA number that you dialed.

9. Similarly, you can give out your Google Voice number to your friends and family in USA to receive free calls to your country.

This was a basic tutorial on how you can make and receive free calls to India, Pakistan, Singapore, UAE, Afghanistan or any country using Google Voice.

How do you get an invitation?
Does this mean that a person already having google voice is the only one who can invite other people or is it that google itself sends out an invitation....if so, what should I do in order to get the invitation?

As of Im wanting to say it was like june (don't hold me to this) Google Voice no longer required an invitation.
    Journey over to http://www.google.com/voice

Make sure you have a gmail account, and just sign into Google Voice with your gmail account info and start making your new phone number and stuff for ex: Internet business.

While this article at one time may have been true, or accurate; it no longer is. Google Voice is a free service yes, but only within the United States and Canada. You can send your calls out to either two countries free but to call to other countries other than those two is considered international calls. This will coast you a low fee per minute.
Ex: China is currently 2 cents per minute, India 6 cents.

Hope this helps, and sorry the services must of charged. That or this person writing the article is a complete moron. IDK but my info is accurate because I have a Google Voice account.

    SoftwareManiac,
I would suggest you to first read the full article before you come to any conclusion and calling names.

Read the step # 8 & 9. As your Google voice account ties to your Gizmo5 or any other SIP service provider, you can practically call to India (to the person who has this setup) and person with this setup in India can call to USA completely free.

You just have to make sure that the person you are calling in India has this setup.

I have been using this setup to talk to my sister everyday.
