Skype, one of the most popular Voice over IP software around the world with around 450 million users is lately opening up its properitery technology to more known standards. Recently Gizmo and Skype launched OpenSky which allows any gizmo user to Call Any Skype User Via Your Gizmo5 Account.
Similarly there is an ongoing effort from Skype for Asterisk Beta Program. The beta version of Skype For Asterisk is an add-on channel driver module that integrates Skype calling with Asterisk-based telephony products. And now Skype just announce the launch of Skype SIP for small businesses.
If you know SIP, it allows you to use regular phones to make and receive phone calls via ATA. With Skype for SIP you simply place and receive calls with Skype using the standards based SIP protocol that many phone systems support natively.
To participate in the Skype for SIP Beta Program you will need to create a temporary Skype ID to use for the Beta Program and you must have, and be able to configure, your own SIP Enabled PBX that supports G.729 codec. Check out SkypeForSIP.com for more information.
If you are a normal Skype user, you might not be able to use Skype SIP settings right now. There is a software that allows you to connect SIP protocol VoIP calls to the proprietary Skype phone network. It works in both directions. The software is called SkypeToSIP.
But if Skype starts allowing its users to use SIP protocol, it would be great for the end users as they don't have to rely on Skype specific phones and computer to make and receive free calls worldwide.
