I am not sure how true this statement is but people on the blogosphere talks about Google's new competitor, Cuil.com. Cuil.com is founded by ex-Googlers. Cuil is claiming to search more pages on the web than anyone else - three times as many as Google and ten times as many as Microsoft.
The real search results {ln:nw:http://www.techcrunch.com/2008/07/27/cuill-launches-a-massive-search-engine/ 'shows different numbers though}. According to TechCrunch, Cuil.com shows less number of results than Google as Google has been indexing WWW for almost a decade now.
Cuil searches for and ranks pages based on their content and relevance. Cuil has plus point for its UI though. It shows search results in two or three columns. You can refine your results by category, it will recommend related searches via tabs.
A search for Mumbai shows tabbed results for refinements like Mumbai University, Mumbai India, Mumbai Hotels, Jobs in Mumbai, Mumbai Yellow Pages etc. It also shows categories like Suburbs of Mumbai, Railway Stations in Mumbai, Mumbai Neighbourhoods. Cuil.com can compete with Yahoo Glue Pages, specialized pages that contain an enhanced visual search result page for select search queries.
So do you think Cuil.com can be next Google? What's your view on this?
