I just stumbled upon http://whathowhat.blogspot.com/2007/09/new-railway-web-site-erailin.html this blog and found out about a really useful website for Indian trains. The site basically provides really easy to use features and is very intuitive. The site is called eRail.in. The site slogan is "Better way to search trains", which is true when you look at this website.
The site provides list of stations you can choose for your journey. Once you select the To and From stations, the site will list all the available trains for that route with all the details about those trains. for e.g. ticket availablity, days of operation, arrival-departure timings etc. Once yous elect the train that you are interested in, the site will bring further details about its route listing the stations that are covered under that route with its arrival and departure information. Though the online ticket booking is not available through that site, a link to ticket booking is available from the site.
I am surprised that the site is not popular already. I found one classified on Kijiji about this site but didn't see lot of marketing. But the product that they are building is really useful. Another greate feature which I am waiting for is maps. Once you select the train, it gives an option to see that route on the map but the feature I believe is still under development. You can also check your PNR status through that site. Once you provide the PNR, it brings data from IndianRail.gov.in site. Though when I tried it, I got a message saying that the network links are not available.
Still one thing I didn't like about the site is frames and overall GUI. Frames in a web 2.0 era is not acceptable. If they change their layout and remove the frames, it would definitely add value. The site is basically aggregating information from different sources to one place in frames.
But overall, you should give it try.
