I don't know how I missed this two websites launch. I was just reading
rediff news and found out about these two new cool sites. Cool because this sites focus on the informal sector workers like maids, drivers, house keepers, gardeners, watch guards etc. The company is founded by two former Microsoft employees and their friend. Sean Blagsvedit (CEO of BabaJob Service Ltd), Ira Weise (Managing Director of BabaJob) and Vibhore Goyal (Chief Technologist, BabaJob). Surprising thing is that Sean and Vibhore designed and coded the site themselves. The site is hosted by Reliace Communications.
But the concept here is noble I would say. Those who work as a driver, maid or watchman, don't know how to market themselves. All their business comes from word of mouth, basically their own offline social network. That sometime becomes their limitation and its possible that they might have to sit at home without work for few weeks or months.
This sites help them find a job. The site also pays people who knows how to operate computer and who help those poor people get a job. Here is an example that was given by Ira Weise. "Let's say A is looking for a cook and places an ad with us for Rs 799. After searching on babajob.com, he ultimately decides to hire his uncle's driver's sister. Assuming all these folks are on babalife.com, the social networking site, both A's uncle and his driver, will earn Rs 100 each
So for those who doesn't know how to use computers, their online profiles will be managed by their friend, relative or an NGO who are basically that person's mentors. So if someone is hired, their mentor earns Rs. 200. Currently the site is functional within Bangalore and those who gets hired normally get under Rs. 10,000 per month. But the site has plans to expand to other cities across the country.
I visited the site and the question I have here is, what in the world a 'Network Administrator' or 'Sales Executive' doing on that website? Comeon, leave this jobs site for those it is designed. Are they expecting to earn those Rs. 100 or Rs. 200 referral out of it?
Getting a reliable person for your house hold works is and has been an issue in India for years. You can not trust anybody and normally you get a person recommendation from your friend or family. This site provides review of a job seeker's records for free. While BabaJob.com is a site for jobs for those people, BabaLife.com is a social network site for them. BabaLife can be viewed in Hindi, Kannada, Tamil and English which is good for those who doesn't know english.
I would appreciate these three guys for making such an effort for those people. I would say they made their websites like an NGO who help needful people.
