When Windows 7 came on the scene, it was a great improvement on the Vista and it was also a bigger success. Many people forgot about the XP after the advent of Windows 7. With Windows 8 round the corner and the Windows 8 Tablet Developer Preview on hand, the same feeling of something big is looming over our heads and even Microsoft feels that this will be the biggest thing after the revolution of Windows 95. Windows 8 is being projected as `Touch the Future’.

With Windows 8, Microsoft has reinvented windows right from the chipset to the user experience. A crucial aspect of windows 8’s design is the fine tuning of the start-up process.

The technologies such as Solid State Drives (SSDs) and Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) will come with optimizations which will leave Windows 7 way behind. With a new start up mechanism, Windows 8 will deliver unmatched speed. It has many more little miracles to offer as you will see on this preview.

These are the key upgrades and improvements that Windows 8 will carry:

  • There will be a new Home Screen Start Menu and live application touch tiles with information that will be updating constantly.
  • There will be a new lock screen that will be showing notifications, date and time with customizable backgrounds.
  • You will be using Internet Explorer 10 with multi-touch options and full screen support.
  • There will be touch facility that will allow you the flexibility to resize.
  • You can use Windows 8 for Desktops, Laptops, Netbooks, Tablet PCs, Servers and even Media Centers.
  • Windows 8 will have support for ARM microprocessors apart from AMD and Intel.
  • Ribbon User Interface is redesigned to make the touch screen input better in addition to the keyboard and the mouse.
  • You will have the option of using a software keyboard as well as a thumb keyboard in addition to the main hardware keyboard. The left panel of the monitor display will stretch the Apps for you while the right panel edge will allow you to pull in the Charms and the Search Tabs.
  • Windows 8 will use less RAM and CPU resources than Windows Vista and Windows 7.
  • A new reset option has been provided to eliminate all junk files that slow down your computer. Within ten minutes of this process, your PC is going to feel fresh without losing data or programs.
  • There will be shorter boot time by saving kernel memory to the hard drive on shutdown.

The biggest news is that all current computers are going to be supported with compatibility to Windows 8.
