Microsoft had been an early entrant in the smartphone sector but their efforts were slowed down by the complex on-screen menus by borrowing design ideas from their desktop team. Once the iPhone appeared on the scene, the Microsoft executives realized that their operating system would not be able to compete as designed.
They realized that it was necessary to start all over from scratch after Apple and BlackBerry pushed them behind in the smartphone race. This has been happening since the last three to four years. Even Google was gaining huge market share. When the Windows Phone 7 handsets were introduced in the third quarter of the last year, Microsoft’s mobile operating system held only nine per cent of the smartphone market, behind a thirty four per cent of BlackBerry, thirty one per cent of Apple and twenty six per cent of Google’s Android systems.
Microsoft hopes to make up some ground with the launch of the Nokia Lumia 900 at the Consumer Technology Tradeshow, CES, to be held this week.
