Indian Railways has offered a contract to a Japanese Consortium to do a pre-feasibility study for running a bullet train on the Hyderabad-Vijayawada-Chennai route.
The train will cover the 664 kilometre distance between Hyderabad and Chennai in just over two hours if it works out at a speed of three hundred kilometres per hour. South Central Railway officials are totally jubilant over such a development while they await the details of the project.
The travel time between the two cities will be reduced by almost twelve hours. The bullet train will transform the economy of this area as well as greatly contribute to the growth of both Hyderabad and Chennai.
The Japanese Consortium that has bagged this contract is the Japan External Trade Organization, Oriental Consultancy and Parsons Brinkhoff (India). They will conduct the pre-feasibility study on the proposed route for running the high speed train.
Japan’s high speed train, Shinkansen, operates at a speed of up to three hundred kilometres per hour. It is known for its comfort, efficiency, punctuality and safety. The Consortium is likely to submit its report in a period of seven months. The study is estimated to cost the railways about three and a half Crores of Rupees. There were originally about thirteen bidders for the high speed rail project. Indian Railways is in the process of constituting the National High Speed Rail Authority on the same lines of the National Highways authority in order to expedite the bullet train project. As per an estimate, it will cost about hundred Crores to build a one kilometre dedicated high speed passage. The ridership revenues are likely to cover the operating cost of the project. State governments and financial institutions are expected to be stakeholders of the high speed rail corridor project.
