In a surprising move, Microsoft has registered domain names this month in the name of Microsoft – Sony.com and Sony – Microsoft.com. There is no doubt that the move speaks of coming of a joint venture or alliance in the near future. It is still surprising that there is no official statement from either of the companies regarding the alliance. It is to be noted that both companies are biggest rivals in the gaming consoles.

 

But experts in the concerned arena are already putting their views on the possible scenarios and outcomes of the Microsoft Sony alliance. One speculation is that the two are going to have a single console replacing both Xbox and Sony’s Playstation and thus get the best out of the both. There are even other wild speculations doing rounds that suggest that Microsoft would have bought Sony! It is also predicated that Sony and Microsoft join hands to make mobile devices with Windows 7 OS running these smartphones.

These speculations are laid to rest with a Tweet from Frank Shaw, Microsoft Corporate Communications VP, that this is a just “defensive” domain name holding exercise but there are many questioned unanswered by that statement. For example, it is not clear what the term “defensive” meant in the context of Microsoft registering two such domain names. Nobody really knows the outcome of this move, until the companies involved come out with concrete details.
