Ships, Cars and buildings were swept apart by the wall of water aftershocks of 8.9 magnitude tremor. It struck about 250 miles (400km) north-east of Tokyo. Pressure exceeded above the normal levels forcing a nuclear power plant to declare a state of emergency.
Strong waves attacked Japan's Fukushima and Miyagi prefectures, damaging groups of coastal communities. 300 to 400 bodies were found alone in one ward in Sendai, a port city in Miyagi prefecture. Japan's ground self-defense forces have been positioned and the government has requested the US military based in the country for the help.
This earthquake was the 5th largest in the world since 1900 and approximately 8,000 times stronger than the one which devastated last month Christchurch, New Zealand
1000 of people have been ordered to vacate coastal areas in the states of Oregon, Washington and California, though there were no reports of any major damage.
The tsunami warning has been extended across the Pacific to North and South America, and many other coastal regions were vacated. The alert has been lifted in most parts including the Australia, Philippines and China.
