It has been said that 3000 HTC mobile’s MicroSD cards are the cause for the spread of the Mariposa Malware and it is estimated that there would be even more users affected because of it as it has reached into user’s computers through the cell phone's storage as said by Vodafone on Friday.
It is found that the 8GB microSD memory cards were infected with a client for the now-defunct Mariposa botnet, the Conficker worm and a password stealer for the Lineage game.
Mariposa botnet code will run automatically and Conficker worm’s autorun capability and the password-stealing program would not run unless someone double clicked the file which infects millions of machines worldwide.
An employee of Panda Security was the first to discover this problem earlier this month. It is estimated that up to 3,000 phones if not even more have been affected by the Malware. Investigation is under way to find how the memory cards became infected. Vodafone’s Spokes man said that, “There are no problems with the HTC Magic phone & its Android OS. The malware’s only affected phones sold in Spain”.
Vodafone will send a letter & a new memory card to replace the affected ones of the customers which will contain instructions on PCs free antivirus scans. The company still maintains that it is just an isolated and local one and this is the first time a phone has been shipped with a virus inside. But, Vodafone's idea to change the memory card will not provide a solution to the problem.
If you had got any of these Vodafone branded HTC Magic’s, scanning your memory card before using it is the only way that u can avoid those Malware affecting your Handset and Computers when connected.
