Having a personal GPS tracking devices could be a dream of many Indians. While that can be far from reality, atleast now you can have your personal GPS or GPS device that you can use in your car or anywhere you want to travel.

I wrote about MapMyIndia who launched India's first GPS device which gives you gps maps of major cities and it will includes  1000 cities, 500,000 towns and villages, and 1 million points of interest. Recently MapMyIndia partenered with Ford India to provide in-car GPS to Ford India's car models. 

The MapmyIndia Navigator is now included with the Navi Gear package of Ford Endeavour. MapmyIndia Navigator is also offered as a new accessory feature available at all authorized Ford dealerships across India, which can be fitted on all Ford vehicle range, including the Ford Fiesta, Ikon, Fusion and the Endeavour.

Currently MapmyIndia Navigator 2.0 provides street level map coverage in 174 cities. So now you can have gps service in bangalore, mumbai, Ahmedabad, Delhi and many other cities. Not everybody knows that you don't have to pay any money to use the GPS device in India. 

GPS device comes with preloaded maps. Global Positioning System satellites transmit signals to equipment on the ground. GPS receivers such as Delphi 10000 GPS or GPS chipset in 6110 or MapMyIndia Navigator.20  passively receive satellite signals. Once they receive signals, it calculates the latitude and longitude of the place and using the preloaded maps it displays your position on the screen.

So there is no such free GPS in India. You only have to pay for the GPS device and once you buy India GPS, you can use it as long as you want. Soon we will be seeing lot of gps integrated systems and don't be surprised if next time you see a GPS in cabs!!
