The Indian government has demanded from Research in Motion, Google and Skype to hand in data in a readable format for the security and intelligence agencies in India. The department of telecom has given the three companies a deadline of 15 days to do the necessary stuff.

If they do not take the necessary measures there is a chance that their services will be banned in India according to Business Line. Security agencies also stated that they didn’t have the means to monitor the services offered by Tata teleservices and reliance Communications. In August 2008 the Indian government has banned also some Blackberry services until they were able to monitor them.

Now Blackberry, Google’s G-mail and Skype- voice- over- IP services are also subject to government’s strong control. The Ministry of Home Affairs, the Intelligence bureau, the DoT and national Technical research organization have decided on a meeting to compel to change the IT laws in order to compel foreign companies such as these to provide readable data to the security and intelligence agencies.

An internal government note obliges the DoT to call the representatives of Research in Motion and Skype compelling them to ensure the content going through them in a readable format. They will have to do that in a timeframe of 15 days otherwise their services will be banned. According to a Google spokesperson, Google has not yet received any letter from DoT and Indian government. The Representatives of Google will receive a call to ensure that the G-mail is in readable format. Although it will be doubtful that this will be fulfilled because Google has been using secured socket layer for a pretty long time.

The Voice-over-IP service of Skype will also be compelled to provide data from its networks. If that is not possible it will be obliged to set up a local server in India which will be inspected by the Indian government for the content passing through it.

It is highly doubtful that Google, Skype and RIM will change their encryption standards for the sake of security.
