How to surf the Web Anonymously?

User Rating: / 0

How can someone know your true identity in a virtual world? After all, the internet has a way of fooling you into a false sense of anonymity. When you connect to the internet, you start sharing information about your computer, your actual location and also the web sites you visit. The main purpose behind anonymous web surfing is to dilute the technologies that have the potential to expose your personal information to others.

No one will know who you are when you surf anonymously. No one will know where you are connecting from or what sites you are visiting. The biggest hang up of surfing the web anonymously is that when people think of using anonymity, they immediately start associating it with malicious hacking, illegal downloading or extra marital affairs or some such sordid behavior. This is not always the case.

There are many reasons why you should remain anonymous online:

  • Your employer or school authorities may have strict web surfing policies and may filter your access to the internet.
  • You are perhaps a free speech advocate and you do not want the government or anyone else to censor your expressions.
  • You feel that internet is the perfect forum to freely express your opinions without the fear of being tracked down by people who don’t see eye to eye with those opinions.
  • You are of a firm belief that the Bill of Rights and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights gives you the go ahead to hold your private business without any external interference.
  • You may be living abroad and you want to access streaming video content that is available only to people living in your home country.
  • You don’t like the idea that the search engines are collecting information about your queries.
  • You don’t want online advertisers to know where you live or what products you buy.
  • You want to take part anonymously in internet forums in order to speak to other people about a private situation.

The best way to avoid revealing your IP address to every web server you contact is by using a proxy server. A proxy server can work as a machine between the rest of the internet and you. You have to make sure that you use a recognized web proxy with a clear cut privacy policy.
