It is important to look deeper, however, in order to determine technological and social trends that will define us for years to come. This helpful infographic about the growth of mobile Internet use in India is thus a useful visualization of data that can begin a conversation as to the future of Internet usage for businesses, students and families alike.

The infographic indicates that there has been a marked shift in Internet use in India from desktop to mobile. While in October 2011 desktop Internet use was close to reaching 70 percent, it has since declined; as of September 2012 it has fallen to 48 percent. Contrastingly, mobile Internet usage rose from about 33 percent to 52 percent in this same time period. This means that more people are carrying around personal devices, investing in a new tablet or laptop and bringing their Internet queries with them in their travels.

India is an interesting case because, as per the infographic, there are very specific parts of society that are pushing this trend. Fifty-nine percent of mobile Internet users are between the ages of 18-24. The mass majority of total Internet users are below the age of 34, and 95 percent of these users are men. This means that the mobile-only Internet trend in India is essentially being steered by a young male populace who carry around their tablets and laptops in the course of an average day.

These mobile-only individuals use the Internet in predictable and patterned ways. The infographic separates mobile Internet usage into the most common categories. The most popular is downloading music at 66 percent, followed by downloading videos and using a search engine at 60 percent and 58 percent, respectively. Downloading games, using social networks like Facebook and Twitter, sending emails and looking up news and navigation advice are other popular activities. This data reveals that people use the mobile-Internet for both entertainment and educational purposes. In search of these multi-layered Internet pursuits, these individuals used Google, Facebook, Youtube and Vuclip, in addition to Wikipedia and other websites.

The latter portion of this infographic compares mobile-only usage in India to other countries around the world and determines that India is not alone in the trend of Internet users going mobile-only. While India has 59 percent mobile-only usage, Egypt takes the lead with 70 percent, while South Africa pulls in third with 57 percent, followed by Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, Indonesia and Thailand. China comes in at 30 percent, while the US is 25 percent and the UK 22 percent. The percentage of mobile-only users is growing, and an awareness of this trend can lead to changes in the way that tablets, smartphones and laptops are made, marketed and employed.
