It is not the case of one angry Indian against Facebook or Google. The entire internet freedom is on trial in India.  The state backed censorship of Salman Rushdie at the Jaipur Literary Festival has grabbed the headlines as `The Republic bows before the Mob’. A serious free speech drama has been quietly played out. It all started with Vinay Rai, Editor of a Delhi based Urdu daily called `Akbari’, filing a criminal complaint in a district court in New Delhi.

Some Twitter users are planning to stop using the service on Saturday, 28^th January, in protest of the company’s new rule that allows for content to be blocked in specific countries. This policy was announced on the company blog yesterday and it will enable Twitter to block specific tweets on a country by country basis when the content is against the local publishing laws.

The prosecutors have made a case that the website was designed with intent to encourage piracy.  When the Megaupload executives come in the court to answer to the charges that they initiated a big online piracy scheme, they are going to be backed by a prominent lawyer who had defended Bill Clinton against sexual harassment charges and also the Enron Company against allegations of corporate fraud. Robert Bennett, a Washington Attorney, is going to represent the Company which was indicted in federal court in Alexandria, Virginia some days back on copyright infringement and other charges.

Apple iPhone 5 will have a four inch screen. Its samples are already under test before an estimated summer launch. It will look much different from iPhone 4S. It has a flat case and does not have a tear drop shape as expected. The information is coming out of Chinese supplier, Foxconn.

The big crackdown on the file sharing site, Megaupload, is not expected to do much to bring down piracy in music, software and Hollywood movies. In fact, the crackdown is stifling the medium of distributing content online. After last week’s indictment of the digital storage company and its seven executives, other companies have begun changing their policies. Megaupload executives are maintaining their innocence in a first court appearance in New Zealand.
