The internet today celebrates the 25th anniversary of the dotcom domain name. On March 15 1985, a Massachusetts-based computer make named Symbolics added dotcom to its name. It was followed by Bbn.com and Think.com.
The market for dotcom would not grow significantly for another few years – that year only six dotcom names were registered, compared to the 100,000 now registered every day. In 2008, Google's crawler indexed its trillionth page.
Symbolics.com, who made computer systems and software based on research at MIT, was the first Daddy and registered the first .com with Network Solutions, a domain registration firm. Since then, Symbolics was purchased by XF.com, an internet domain investment firm, in 2009, while Network Solutions was acquired by Verisign in 2000. Symbolics now serves as the blog of XF.com.
The majority of the first 100 registered dotcom names were computer companies, with Apple registering on February 19, 1987, while Microsoft only bought theirs in 1991. There are now 84 million domain names.
According to the Symbolics website, the domain '.com' evolved as more companies and corporations became connected to the internet. According to Craig Partridge, from Raytheon BBN Technologies, '.cor' was first proposed as the domain for corporations, but eventually it was switched to '.com'. It is thought that '.com' originally derviced from "commercial".
