Back in April 2003 Ratan Tata, Chairman of India's second-largest and longest-established conglomerate, said he is pressing ahead with a project to bring to market a $2,000 car (Rs 1 Lakh), which he believes could revolutionise personal transport in India and some other asian countries.

he said. "It will look like a car and have proper seating-stretched canvas seats would not, for example, be acceptable. It would be all right for it to be a bit more noisy than an ordinary car, but it has to be both simple and safe."

To continue the story, Rediff reported that this car would be gearless. After months of speculations back in March 2007 during Geneva Motor show, some details about the specifications of this car came out.

The car will be a four-door, four to five seater car that will sport a modern, monoform design. The car will feature a 600cc petrol engine and would be rear mounted. I think Fiat premier padmini and Embassador were also rear wheel drive. But after Maruti 800 most of the new cars are front wheel drive. And probably thats why Marui 800 were initially called "Frontie".

There are speculations that the car will be launched by mid 2008 from Singur in West Bengal. Looks like Tata needs this new launch. Their recent press release reported total sales of 17, 580 passenger vehicles in the domestic market in May 2007, a decline of 3% over May 2006.The Indica reported sales of 12,002 nos., a decline of 3% over May 2006. The Indigo family registered sales of 2,215 nos., a decline of 22% over May 2006.

To continue the series of events, DNA India reported today that Minda Group had signed a letter of intent with Tata Motors for supply of different kind of auto components for this Rs 1 lakh car. This components include switches, horns, lights and batteries. While Bosch will supply the engine kit, Sona Koyo and Rane will provide the steering, Shriram Pistons the pistons and Ricoh Auto the clutches.

I am waiting to see this Rs 1 Lakh car. I am sure its going to be a big hit. But the Time will tell. So may be next year I might be writing review about this car, who knows!!
