I know it sounds crazy but I was trying to write up an article on how you can actually get free wireless internet access in India. During my research I found this article on written on Slashdot back in 2007 that Indian government proposed to offer all citizens of India free, high-speed broadband connectivity by 2009, through the state-owned telecom service providers BSNL and MTNL. The story was pointing to the article published on EITimes.
The government of India plans to achieve free broadband connectivity at a speed of 2 MB per second across the country by spending only a portion of the corpus of the Universal Service Obligation Fund (USOF). It is estimated that the unutilised sum from the USOF has touched Rs 9,194.12 crore by March, 2007-end.
Does anyone of you know how close are we on this goal? We are only couple months away from 2009 and I don't see a single sign which tells me that the citizens of India will be getting free Wireless Internet.
