The stress of travelling can make you fall sick. If you are an adult or a teenager, the good part is that your body’s immune system is quite strong but a poor diet and lack of sleep will make it easier for you to fall sick.
You may need to take some vaccinations in advance as different countries have different requirements.
Three of the most common health problems that you may encounter when travelling are jet lag, diarrhoea and altitude sickness.
When you fly across the time zones, the differing light and the position of the sun can change your internal body clock and make you a jet lag victim. This may upset the stomach and bowel movement routines, sometimes resulting in acute diarrhoea. It may also bring in tiredness and insomnia.
You must remember that when you are travelling from the west to the east, you have to stay out of the sun for a full day after your arrival. If you fly from east to west, go for a brisk walk as early as possible after you arrive.
For altitude sickness and breathlessness, get up every couple of hours on long flights and walk in the aisles as much as possible, exercising your legs and feet muscles. Acetazolamide can help relieve symptoms of altitude sickness. Try and stay on a limited diet while on the flight and at least for a day after arriving at a new destination. Eat light and drink lots of mineral water. This will take care of the common health ailments on a vacation.
