Slut Walk is motion protest sexual violence against women who are persecuted on the pretext of dressing up provocatively and thus "asking for it", definition states. Delhi Slutwalk is purely an offshoot of the iconic Toronto Slutwalk, has now been renamed as Slutwalk Athaart Besharmi Morcha. Delhi Chapter of this international movement is initiated by a DU student, Umang Sabharwal, earlier has been postponed from June 25, now will be held sometime in the last week of July. The aim of the Delhi chapter is also to combat the culture of victim blaming in most rape cases, campaigner says.
"Not all people in Delhi will understand the meaning of 'slut'. So after a lot of debate and discussion, we decided on 'Besharmi Morcha' (shameless protest)," said Umang Sabarwal, one of the chief organisers of the walk. (Courtesy IANS)
Slut Walks have been named as a global event which became a platform to protest against sexual violence after a police officer in Toronto this year caused indignation by stating during a speech to university students that women should avoid "dressing like sluts" in order not to be victimized.
In India, Walk has been somewhat planned in different manner compared to International version, however this would be toned down version of the other walks elsewhere which have seen women dress in skimpy clothing to dare the attitude that victims of sexual violence should be held responsible for the assault on them. Facebook becomes the new source of attraction & asking Mahila Community across the country to join for this noble campaign to raise the voice of Women.

"Slut Walk 2011 is an attempt to reclaim the word slut, to remove the shame and replace it with pride! Women aren't sluts just because we exercise the choice to be our own persons," according to the Facebook page. "It doesn't make anyone a slut to wear what he or she wants to, to date endless men or women, to wear high heels or low-cut clothes," it adds. "In a city where girls are molested in broad daylight, on the footpath, in buses and on the Metro, the purpose of the Slut Walk is to bring to the attention of the society that the problem is not what we do, but what is done to us," it further says.
India is one of the country where massive violence against women reported in last two decades. NGOs & Other organizations working for Women have been raising voice to stop abuses & Sexual assaults. But no major breakthrough has been yet made, neither from Government side nor other agency. Discrimination against women is somewhat lies inside the root of Indian culture, since Women had been treated worsen since medieval period. Many Social Activists have raised their concerns over Women Violence & they’re still protesting. Hopefully this motion may help to change MINDSET among men.
