On Monday Microsoft has officially launched the browser based versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote. These Office Web Apps are small versions of these popular desktop programs. They allow document viewing, sharing and lightweight editing. All tools can be used for free from users along with 25 GB of free storage space.

The businesses have also the option to host their own version of these Web Apps with the help of the latest version of SharePoint. The main disadvantage of these programs is that they require an active Internet connection in order to run.

Jason Moore said in his blog post that the launch of office 2010 was expected after few weeks. According to him this office 2010 combined with other applications such as SkyDrive and Office Web applications will produce best productivity experience through PC, phone and browser. For all those living in Canada, US, UK or Ireland it will be possible to view and edit Word, PowerPoint , Excel and OneNote documents from their browsers and share them with friends.

People outside these application will be able to also use these applications but not in their native languages. The release of these Office Web Apps has become a reality almost at the moment when Google has stated that it was necessary for businesses to skip this version of Office, and add Google Docs to the old version of the program.

These web applications are designed to work on Mac, Windows and Linux based computers. The supported browsers are Firefox, Internet explorer and Safari. The Google Chrome and other browsers also work well with these apps. These free versions will be most probably ad supported.

Microsoft has shared that it is planning to show ads which will persuade people to buy the full versions of the programs. The new web application has also been built into a new version of hotmail. The Microsoft has also teamed up with Facebook to create the so called Docs.com. It allows sharing of Office documents over facebook.

The desktop versions of these programs have been released for sale for businesses last month. They will be available for the use of ordinary people next week.
