Here I am going to list here 10 different ways you can pay your bills using mobile or use mobile to pay for your shopping. It all first started with cash cards and now we have highly interactive applications like Mobile Banking Application From ICICI Bank.
PayMate - (Don't confuse this with Playmate - LOL) - Paymate is an SMS based payment service which allows you to make payments via your mobile phone. You can use Paymate for online shopping, movie tickets, utility bills etc. You need to have a valid credit card or debit card from one of the Paymate's partner banks. Your mobile is linked securely to your existing bank account (credit or debit) and that’s where all your payments will be debited.
Once you choose to pay via PayMate at any of the accredited merchants, all you have to share is your mobile number. You will instantly receive a SMS (with the merchant name and amount) asking for authorization of payment via PIN and re-entering the alpha code mentioned in the SMS. Once you reply to this SMS, within a few seconds your bank will authenticate the details and debit the amount to your account.
Paymate works on any mobile phone and you don't require mobile internet (GPRS/EDGE) connectivity to use Paymate.
mChek - mChek lets you put your credit card in your mobile phone and use it in a safe, smart and simple manner for over the counter and internet purchases or probably person to person payments. You can use your mobile phone to make credit and debit card payments. Currently you can use mChek to pay your Airtel post-paid bills. mChek is planning to add more utility billers and other service providers soon. You can register to mChek via their website or Airtel mobile users can register directly from their post-paid mobiles by sending SMS 'mCheck' to 121.
You do not need any GPRS or EDGE service to use mChek.
Obopay - Obopay is a mobile payment service in the United States which has entered into Indian market last year. You can use mobile phone to get, send, or spend money via Obopay. You can make payment via Text message, your phone’s Internet browser, or download Obopay onto your phone. Obopay claims that you can safely send money anywhere in India in less than 15 seconds. One good thing about Obopay is that you can post your obopay button on your website to send or get money from friends and customers. You can also use their WAP site wap.obopay.in to make or receive payments via mobile. To me it looks like Obopay is like a Paypal for mobile.
You DO require GPRS to use Obopay. Looks like Obopay WAP site is not working right now for some reason. I was not able to access it.
NGPay(JiGrahak) - nGpay is another mobile application that lets you make payment transactions via your mobile. To download ngpay on to your mobile handset all you need to do is to SMS ngpay to 56767 OR to +91 99009 06677 from your mobile. Get SMS for the download, install it, register it and then you can add your credit card information for your future mobile payments.
You need java enabled mobile handset and a GPRS connection from your cell provider to use ngpay's free services.
tyFone - tyfone uses different technology for the mobile payments which is different and little complicated for the end users (thats what I believe after looking at how tyfone works). tyfone uses u4ia payment client (like an SD card) which has information related to your bank account etc. You can plug this u4ia payment client in your phone and use it to make physical domain POS payments. This application is not launched in India yet but India's Ojas Venture Partners has invested money to the company and probably in future it will be available in India.
ItzCash - ItzCash cards are prepaid money cards which you can use to make your payments for your shopping bills, mobile bills etc. Reliance, Airtel and many other companies has tied up with ItzCash cards so that you can make purchases using your mobile devices + ItzCash cards. One example is that you can Book your tickets using Reliance via Itz Cash.
DoneCards - Similar to ItzCash cards. It is a cash card which can be used to make payments for mobile recharge, shopping, games etc.
HDFC mWallet - HDFC is planning to launch its mobile banking application soon. The application has not been launched yet but you can expect it to be available probably this year (thats my gut feeling).
ICICI iMobile - ICICI bank has introduced its mobile banking application called iMobile. Using this application you can do all your banking transactions via your mobile phones. You can transfer funds to ICICI and Non ICICI Bank accounts. This application covers Savings bank, Demat, Credit Card and Loan accounts. Mobile Banking Application From ICICI Bank
