Webdunia.com has recently lanuched its regional portals in 9 languages. Hindi, Bengali, Gujarati, Marathi, Punjabi, Kannada, Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam.

Webdunia started in 1999 with portals in Hindi, Tamil, Malayalam and Telugu. But looks like there is something more cooking @ webdunia's kitchen.  Webdunia.com has recently launched its "Search Beta". The search page has an option to search in above mentioned 9 languages. Though the current search functionality is restricted to their site but they have provided an option to search the web in those 9 regional languages. Currently the option is disabled and says "Coming soon".

What I like about their search engine is the ease of typing in your regional language in the search box. The site has done a greate job providing this feature where you type in english keywords and it converts your words into your selected language. There is a keyboard help link which gives you an on-screen keyboard to select the words that you want in your language.

If they extend their search functionality for world wide web then this site would be useful for those who want to search in their language.

There are only few "regional language" serach engine available in India. Raftaar.com, Guruji.com are two of them and then there is Google.co.in which started its local language search few months ago.

Raftaar.com is only Hindi search engine though. The site provides on-screen hindi keyboard to enter your query. The site also provides neews headlines and other helpful information in Hindi.

Guruji.com has also launched its local language search engines. Guruji.com also provides an on-screen language keyboard to type in your query.

Google.co.in has also launched its Indian language search engines. The only problem is that they don't provide an on-screen keyboard or a feature to convert your english keywords into indian language. I wonder how difficult it would be for them to implement that as they already have that feature in Blogger platform.

So just to sum it up, Now India has three (fourth one is in the oven @ webdunia.com) Indian language search engine. Guruji.com, Raftaar.com (only Hindi search engine) and Google.co.in.
