WebIndia123 has a nice article about Laptop usage in India.  According to the study, notebook sales account for over 13% of the total PC market.

"Notebooks are becoming increasingly affordable, hence their consumption in the households grew fivefold accounting for more than one-fifth of the total notebooks market," Vinnie Mehta, executive director, MAIT, told a press conference here Thursday.

Annual sales of notebooks grew by a whopping 97 percent, with 850,860 units sold in 2006-07 compared to 431,834 in 2005-06. The total PC sales rose to 6.34 million units in 2006-07 compared to over 5 million in 2005-06.

So what kind of laptops are famous in India ? Sony Vaio laptops are one of the famous laptops in India. Few others are Toshiba Satellite, Lenovo ThinkPad and HP. I found this article on IndiaTimes  which has a list of India’s most popular laptops.

HRD ministry is planning to make $10 laptops. So far, the cost of one laptop, after factoring in labour charges, is coming to $47 but the ministry feels the price will come down dramatically considering the fact that the demand would be for one million laptops. "The cost is encouraging and we are hopeful it would come down to $10.

Even Accer has launced its Aspire 3680 series of entry level notebooks, priced at Rs 19,999. The aspire 3680, according to Acer, is the lowest-priced notebook from among the major brand names and is focused on providing quality computing experience to its customers at an affordable price.

If laptops are becoming cheap, why not buy a laptop ? You get the mobility.

Laptops were originally considered to be "a small niche market" and were thought suitable mostly for "specialized field applications" such as "the military, the Internal Revenue Service, accountants and sales representatives". Battery-powered portable computers had just 2% worldwide market share in 1986. But today, there are already more laptops than desktops in businesses, and laptops are becoming obligatory for student use and more popular for general use. According to a forecast by Intel, more laptops than desktops will be sold in the general PC market as soon as 2009.Nice blog.
