Hacking is a common threat faced by many E-mail accounts providers. But, Google has come up with a new Geo location based feature for its Gmail users. This Geo location feature will alert Gmail users, if any mistrustful activity or any intrusion is detected in their accounts.
Hacker tries to hack the username and password and with which they can access the email and the original user will not know if their account was used by the hackers to send unwanted mails for ransom or obscene.
If someone other than you had tried to access their account they will be notified by this Geo location feature and Google will notify it out to you. This feature works in this way, if suspicious activity is identified in google account when the IP address has been matched with the geographical location, they would be notified by a red warning message.
Pavni Diwaniji Engineering director commented in a blog post that, "Though we don't have the ability to resolve the specific location from where an account is being accessed, a login that has been done from one country and suddenly another login occurring a few hours in another country will trigger an alert." For example, when you are located in America and someone else has accessed your Gmail account from Nigeria, then Google's automated responder system will resolve the IP address and will show up warning message which states a Warning: “We believe your account was recently accessed from: Nigeria”.
Google has earlier presented remote sign out service feature for Gmail users to sign out from anywhere. Gmail Users will also be able to get the log of their Gmail account activity by a Details link from 'Last account activity' at the lower bottom of Inbox. The next step after a red warning message was issued, and it means that your Gmail account has been hacked lately, then only possibility to escape the attack next time is to change the password immediately.
Those users who are on the move and are traveling abroad can click on 'Dismiss' to stop that message from showing up. The Google would display an alert in form of a message banner and this is just like its standard security practices. However, this service is still not available to Google Apps customers currently, but will soon have it working.
