HTML 5 is the latest buzz among web communities and website developers. HTML 5 is a latest update to well known mark up language (HTML). HTML5 introduces a number of new elements and attributes that reflect typical usage on modern Web sites and the biggest one of all is its core support for audio and videos.

Till now, Flash was being used widely across board for displaying videos on sites like Youtube, Metacafe, DailyMotion etc. HTML5 video tag is intended by to become the new normal way to show video online. So I am going to show you what browsers support HTML5 videos and what websites currently shows HTML5 videos

List of Browsers that support HTML5

  1. Google Chrome -- Google has begun supporting a new HTML feature to show video in its Chrome browser as an alternative to Adobe Systems' much more widely used Flash. The support comes in 3.0 generation of the Google browser. Google's Chrome 3 Browser can now display videos using HTML 5 <video> tag. Google Chrome supports H.264 and Ogg Theora technology for HTML5 videos.
  2. Apple's Safari 4 -- Apple's Safari 4 was the first browser to support HTML 5. If you point Safari 4 to Apple’s welcome page, you will see all kinds of things going on. For instance, there’s an animated Safari icon, audio and video, all put together using HTML 5 and all generated dynamically. Apple's Safari supports only H.264 encoding for the HTML5 videos
  3. Internet Explorer 8 -- Do you really think IE8 supports HTML5? Microsoft's Internet Explorer can support HTML5 with Google Chrome Frame installed (Download Google Chrome Frame for IE)
  4. Firefox 3.6+ also supports HTML5. Firefox can play video encoded only with Ogg Theora technology.
  5. Opera 10.5 Beta -- Programmer Andreas Bovens announced Opera's HTML5 video support in a blog post. Opera 10.5 can play video encoded only with Ogg Theora technology.

Now Lets see what video sites provide HTML5 videos..

HTML5 is in its infancy. There are still battles between which encoding formats to use (Ogg or H.264). Most likely the standard will be Ogg in the future as it is open source and who doesn't love open source? So there are not lot more sites that support HTML5 yet. But here are few..

YouTube -- Youtube was the first site to launch its support for HTML5 videos. You can visit YouTube's HTML5 page using one of the above mentioned HTML5 supported browsers and watch HTML5 videos.

Vimeo - Less than a day after YouTube announced that it would begin rolling out an HTML5 video player to videos on its site, Vimeo also announced the support for HTML5 videos. The site offers users the option to play videos without the need for Adobe Flash. The new option to switch to the HTML5 player will appear as a link below each video. The site will then remember a user's preference from session to session.

So Enjoy your videos with HTML5 enabled browsers..
