If you are using Facebook, you should be aware of this new threat that is making its round on the internet. The Fan Check application is actually a virus, and should be avoided at all costs. The Fan Check has been used to lead users to various malware and spyware ridden sites.
The virus supposedly acts in the following way: if you try to access a Facebook application located at apps.facebook.com/fancheck/ (previously called StalkerCheck), you’ll get this message:
“FanCheck is adding new features and new capacity. This could take a few days.
Please become a fan, and we’ll send you an update when we’re back online”
security company Sophos reports that hackers have set up websites pretending to be about the "Facebook Fan Check Virus", but which really host fake anti-virus software which display bogus warnings about the security of your computer in an attempt to get you to install fraudulent software and cough-up your credit card details.
The bogus warnings look near identical to previous fake anti-virus software attacks seen in the past - with a scrolling green progress bar and a list of alleged threats found on the computer displayed in a dramatic red color scrolling up.
